School Programs
We put Vermont Milk in Vermont Schools!
This was one of our goals from the very beginning of our milk bottling journey here at Miller Farm.
Our milk for schools is packaged in gallon milk jugs or in our bag and box system (bibs). The bag and box system is compatible with “Silver Cows”, a milk dispenser system. Changing from individual milk cartons has been shown to reduce overall food waste in school lunch programs. Children have autonomy to choose if they would like milk, and how much they would like. And as it turns out, kids are pretty good at taking what they will actually drink. This also allows multiple grades to consume volumes consistent with their own growth and development. High school students and kindergarten students are unlikely to drink the same amount. The “Silver Cow” also introduces the concept of the cafeteria as a classroom where kids can learn about nutrition and have a knowledge of where their food comes from.
We currently offer Chocolate and yummy Whole milk per the FDA guidelines. During the summer months, when students are not in school, we participate in the summer food assistance programs that work to give families food support year round.
We are happy to provide milk to the following schools: Saxons River Elementary School, Bellows Falls Central Elementary School, Bellows Falls Middle School, Bellows Falls Union High School, Leland and Gray Middle and High School, Townshend Elementary School, Vernon Elementary School, Westminster Center School, Brattleboro Area Middle School, and Brattleboro Union High School.

Come explore the farm!
Agriculture and food education is a huge part of what we do here at Miller Farm. We hold as a value that all people should know where their food comes from as a means of food security and the decentralization of food systems.
Children come from schools around the region to tour the farm and learn the journey from farm to plate. Each child has an opportunity to learn about and observe the processes of pasteurization, bottling and storage of the milk. From there, students are shown the milking parlor and have interactive time with our cows.
Seasonally, we go on a pasture walk to join the cows and discuss grazing and organic farming practices. If visiting us during the winter months and the weather cooperates, our pasture hills are available for sledding if permitted by the visiting school. We visit the goats, chickens, and sweet baby calves. Then we touch and smell the different food the cows are fed and learn about safety around large animals and equipment. At all points, students are given opportunities to ask questions about what they see and wonder about the farm and animals.
